For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and
lose his own soul?

Metric PrefixesMetric Prefixes are generally understood to
include both the long scale and the short scale.
Why both are used still is as easily explained as saying... 'Britain' and 'France'.
In the English speaking world the short scale is mostly used while Europe and the rest of the world use the long
scale.
What are the differences you ask?
Well, the short scale Billion prefix (109) is giga, Trillion prefix (1012) is tera, Billionth
prefix (10-9) is nano, Trillionth prefix (10-12) is pico and so on.
The long scale for metric prefixes is the more widely known and consists of Billion prefix (1012)
is tera, Trillion prefix (1018) is eksa, Billionth prefix (10-12) is pico and so on..
The International Bureau of Weights and Measures (also known by its French name: Bureau International des Poids et
Mesures, or BIPM) maintains and implements standards of units and measurements around the world
including metric prefixes. The SI (Systeme International d’Unites) or International System of Units is the
direct result of their formation and subsequent meetings from their inception in 1875.
